Soma is the substance, that will hold BNW together, it is the glue between all the cracks of the old buildings.
Soma is the escape of problems, unrest and despair.
For the civilized world, it is something they use every day of their lives, Soma is a reward. A reward that keeps you away from dissatisfaction, doubts, confusion, shock, stress, horror and the real life.
Soma is what kills your brains and keeps you satisfied. In BNW you can´t really live without it and you can´t live a real life with it.
The moment you take it the first time, you are damned, you are part of the projekt, part of the product, part of society.
You won´t even realize the moment when you start to get addicted to it, when you need a gramme twice a 2, thrice a day and more...

To me, Soma sounds like Coma, because you send your brain to rest when you take it. You lose your brain, and it will be hard to wake yourself up from this dream far away from reality.
